What is two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your Betterment account, requiring a unique verification code from a mobile authenticator app, SMS text message, or phone call during login. While no security measure is perfect, 2FA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access and is mandatory at Betterment.

Automatic 2FA settings will send the verification code via SMS or phone call. If you prefer using a mobile authenticator app, visit Settings and follow the instructions in the 'How can I set up an authenticator app on my mobile device?' FAQ.

Upon completing 2FA login, we can remember your trusted device for two years upon request, reducing the need for frequent code input.
