Change your own email (plan sponsor or admin)
Option A, do it yourself:
- Go to Settings > Plan manager > Add plan manager.
- Add yourself as a new plan manager using your new email address.
- Accept the invitation sent to the new address.
- Log in with the new email, then deactivate your old plan manager login.
Option B, ask us: contact Plan Support with the new email address and we'll update it for you. To keep your plan secure, we may ask you to confirm the request by email, and we'll copy your plan administrator.
If something goes wrong:
- "Email already in use." If the new address is already tied to another Betterment login, it can't be added directly. Contact Plan Support and we'll send an invitation to that address for you to confirm.
- The invitation link has expired or doesn't work. Contact Plan Support. We'll resend it or update the email for you.
- You're listed as "Staff" and can't make changes. Staff users can't change account settings. Ask your plan administrator to update your access under Settings > Plan managers > Add plan managers or contact plansupport@betterment.com.
Change an employee's email
You can't change an employee's email yourself, but our team can do it for you.
Have this information ready:
- The employee's full name
- Their current email on file, if you know it
- The new email address
- Whether they're an active or former employee
Then email plansupport@betterment.com. You can update several employees in one request.
Good to know:
- Former employees: it's a good idea to switch them to a personal email so they can still reach their account after they leave.
- Payroll integrations: if your payroll provider sends us employee details, an email change made with Betterment may be replaced by the address in your payroll system. Update it there too.
- Can't finish enrolling after an email change? If an employee sees "identity verification is invalid," they should open the enrollment email and verify with their date of birth and Social Security number. If they can't find the email, they can go to betterment.com/account-access. If it still doesn't work, contact us with the exact error message.
Should employees use a work or personal email?
We recommend a personal email so employees can still reach their account if they change jobs.
Email notifications
- Not receiving compliance or plan emails: make sure you're set up as a plan administrator under Settings > Manage access, check your spam folder, and add Betterment to your safe senders list.
- A former employee or deactivated user is still getting plan emails: deactivate them under Settings > Manage access, or contact us and we'll remove them.
