Fun Fact:

Jon has traveled to every single state in the U.S. and over 40 countries worldwide.

Jon Stein

Founder & CEO

Jon is an engineer. An engineer who majored in economics at Harvard, studied finance at Columbia Business School, and became a Chartered Financial Analyst charterholder just for the hell of it.

For years he consulted the biggest financial institutions on Wall Street on risk management, product design, and investing strategy. But he wasn't satisfied by "helping the big banks to make more money," so he set out to play for the other team: to build powerful and intuitive advice services for consumers.

Having mastered finance, he wondered, "Why is it so annoyingly time-consuming and computationally intense to optimize my own savings and investments?" And so he built Betterment.

Jon is passionate about fixing and building. In his spare time he likes to play at carpentry, electrical work, motorcycle repair, plumbing, gardening – or just browse at Home Depot. He taught himself to code so he could build the first version of the Betterment website and write the trading and rebalancing algorithms.

Fun Fact:

Eli is an award‑winning Haiku poet.

Eli Broverman

Co-Founder & COO

As a young lawyer, Eli had to make a tough choice: invest his time in his career, or invest his time managing his money.

Like many young professionals, he chose his career. The only things that got done routinely were things that were automated – bill payments, computer backups, food delivery, and season pass on his DVR.

Eli had good intentions of setting up investing accounts, but struggled to overcome the hurdle of inertia.

He started Betterment so that there would be a smart way for others like him to put their investments on auto-pilot.

An experienced product manager and consultant, Anthony has built online products and retail strategies for Fortune 500 companies, such as American Express, in the United States and abroad. Anthony's background includes advising senior executives as a management consultant for First Manhattan Consulting Group, and earning dual degrees in Strategic Management and Operations & Information Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

At Betterment you can find Anthony doing everything from talking with customers, cultivating product strategy, designing user experiences, or coaching the team on our speaking skills (he is a trained voiceover artist).

Fun Fact:

You can find Dustin on IMDB.

Loves Betterment because:

The entire team is focused on making smart investment decisions simple.

Dustin Lucien

Vice President of Engineering

Dustin is the epitome of engineering effectiveness. When he walked into the Betterment office, our software development instantly became so Agile it was doing cartwheels. He's the type of leader we all aspire to emulate ‐ one who guides us to smarter decisions and rolls up his sleeves when the development gets down to the wire.

Dustin's knack for the sciences extends beyond just his software savvy. As a Biomedical Engineering graduate student at Case Western he managed a Surgical Planning Laboratory and went on to work for a startup focused on scientific computing in gene sequence analysis. Then, after a stint in film production, he returned to engineering, with leadership roles at big name companies Oracle and The Ladders.

Dustin would be happy to chat with you about his vintage motorcycle or speak "dev" to you in Java, PHP, Javascript, or Ruby. When not engrossed in engineering (whether of the software or vehicle variety), you can catch Dustin in the kitchen. He frequently recreates all-star recipes with expert finesse. His skill with a spatula makes him Betterment's top chef.

In short, Dustin's an all-around excellent engineer whose Kanban boards and cooking creds inspire us all.

Fun Fact:

Text Edwin and you might just hear his Super Mario Bros ring tone.

Loves Betterment for:

Its groundbreaking technology and disruptive mission.

Edwin Chau

Lead Software Engineer

Edwin keeps the Betterment development boat afloat. He's been with us since nearly the beginning, after an impressive career at startups, web companies, and even as a former consultant at Hitachi Consulting.

Edwin earned his degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Management Science from the University of California, San Diego (genius, much?) and brought to Betterment a grasp of everything from Java to Perl to PHP to Python. If you've transacted at all on your Betterment account you've witnessed the perfection that is Edwin's work.

In his free time, you might find Edwin coding some more, just because he can. Ever used Foursquare to buzz into your office? Edwin has. And so has the rest of the Betterment team, thanks to his ingenious hack.

We knew bringing Edwin on board was the right move when we discovered his aptitude to divulge a deal. Much like Betterment doesn't believe investment advice should cost you an arm and a leg, in Edwin's eyes, there's no sense in overpaying for – well, anything. You can rely on him to appreciate the true value in everything from the latest ipad to the best financial recommendations.

But unlike the latest gadget or widget, Edwin's contributions to Betterment are priceless.

Prior to joining Betterment, Alex worked at JPMorgan for 10 years in Credit Markets and Risk Technology, focusing on derivatives products. He was also a financial planner and wealth advisor at Ascent Financial Group, LLC.

Alex is also one of the few people we know who has 2 full time jobs – one at Betterment, and one at home with his 2 adorable kids. When Alex isn't improving our advice algorithms or taking his daughters to dance class, you can find him scaling the tallest mountains and climbing the toughest rocks.

If you want someone to lead you down the trail to a better financial future, we can't think of anyone more qualified than Alex.

Yuri Soussov

Software Engineer

Yuri was born to code. He hails from New York University where he earned his Masters in Computer Science – and also picked up a love for all things Made in NYC. Betterment, therefore, was a natural fit.

A master of Java, his functions run so quickly it's like they all perform in linear time. But don't let his Java mastery fool you; he picked up C++ and SQL too, just for kicks. He previously flexed his financial coding prowess as an intern at Bloomberg, developing enhanced charts and analysis tools.

At Betterment, Yuri focuses on improving server functionality and all of our back-end processes so our customer experience is as seamless as possible. New feature you've always wanted? He makes it happen.

When not coding up a storm, you can catch Yuri on the courts – the tennis courts, that is. A former NCAA champ, Yuri nails his serve just like he crushes code. And when he wins a match he just might dazzle you with a custom victory song. That's right – Yuri is also a musician. You can find him playing a mean bass all over Manhattan and Brooklyn.

A multi-talented maven of everything from for-loops to forehands, we're proud to have him on the Betterment team.

To top it off, Archana earned her degree in Applied Mathematics from San Francisco State University. The best part? She will walk you through it so you understand it without a single question.

Sarah is a certified bartender.

Challenges you to:

Loves Betterment because:

Sarah Whinnem

Graphic & Web Designer

When Sarah joined Betterment she was tasked with designing a brand that was clean, simple, and beautiful (everything your average financial institution is not!) When she hit the nail on the head with her very first design, we knew she was a winner.

While Sarah's designs are worthy of a Webby, even more astounding are her development creds. Though HTML and CSS are in her roots, she's quickly becoming an expert in many other languages – not because she has to, but because she's so good at it!

And if you didn't know Betterment's brochure site was entirely coded in WordPress, that means her design is working flawlessly. Her WordPress wizardry is so advanced she was asked to present at WordCamp, an annual conference for everything shiny and new in WordPress World.

Although Sarah's dedication to Betterment is unmatched, her commitment to her social community is in a close second. As standing Mayor of the Betterment office on Foursquare and soon to be the Queen of Klout, she holds the most cards when it comes to the latest and greatest in the twitterverse and beyond.

An influencer with design intelligence, Sarah knows how to make things better and spread the word about it.

Challenges you to:

Loves Betterment because:

It's like having a chauffeur for my money; I get to spend more time enjoying life while getting where I want to go.

Alan Norton

Lead Software Engineer

Alan helps improve our entire software stack, front-to-back and end-to-end, as Betterment’s resident hacker polymath. He juggles JavaScript in the morning, ponders Python in the afternoon, scribbles Scala in the evening, and bangs out a couple Bash scripts just before bed. He has saved the day with regular expressions. Twice.

Ever since his first line of code at the tender age of seven, Alan has strived to discover everything he can about making stuff work better. A self-described "aestheticist," he believes that the key to good code is beautiful, readable code. He thrives on discussion of approach and implementation, striving always to educate – and more importantly learn from – those around him.

While earning a degree in Computer Science from UNC Chapel Hill, he occupied himself breaking and fixing software for IBM. Afterwards, he joined Amentra (now Red Hat Consulting) to lead teams of engineers designing and building enterprise systems for a variety of clients. We were glad to steal him away to Betterment.

When he's not building stuff, you might find him reciting a Shakespearean monologue, fiddling with antique locks, or playing an ambitious game of Nethack.

No, he’s not related to the anti-virus guy.

Her Aussie accent makes everything better, but it's her remarkable wit and and way with words that wooed us. In addition to running Betterment HQ like a machine, her writing skills are top notch. If you read the Betterment blog, you'll be sure to see her pop up time and time again.

What makes Lucy so unusual is her dedication to delight. At Betterment we are all about delighting our customer, and Lucy takes that to the next level, whether tackling a call to the support line with a smile on her face or celebrating an office birthday in style.

It's pretty clear that without her around, our office allocation would never be rebalanced.

At Betterment he focuses on continuing to make our design enviable by the rest of the financial world – and then some – from enhancing our site to supporting the marketing team on our customer communications.

When he's not knee deep in CSS, you might find Ken banging away at the drums. His musical talent is so impressive that he once opened up for Bob Marley's band.

Betterment runs on data. Which is why Betterment runs on the work that Patrick Burns produces. He dives deep into the multitudes of numbers we generate and uses his analytical prowess to figure out from them, "What’s best for our customers?"

Patrick comes to us with degrees from some of the world’s most renown institutions – Oxford and Yale, specifically – specializing in physics and statistics. He uses expertise in R and SQL to get the information we gather daily about how customers behave and turns it into actionable advice for the business. Patrick started as an intern at Betterment with a dream and a master’s degree – now he helps deliver the best of behavioral economic analysis to everyone who uses our product.

Patrick brings his European flavor to New York by playing rugby and football (the David Beckham kind) in his free time. He worked for two summers at Betterment, learning how to serve our customers on the front-end with clean, elegant code. Now that he’s graduated from the University of Chicago, we get his development chops full-time.

Technology improves at a rapid pace, and so do our customers’ needs. Cyrus is right there with both – he’s as efficient as Betterment’s software, using precision and speed to optimize the customer experience. He can “speak” PHP, Java, Javascript, HTML, and CSS, and he wraps it all up with his qualitative analysis – as one of Betterment’s first 200 customers, he gets what works and what doesn’t.

Cyrus uses his front-end development know-how for his own music business, FindNewJams.com – his first client has already played massive festivals alongside some of the biggest names in dance music, including Spring Awakening at Chicago’s Soldier Field. He has interests outside of coding, too. Cyrus is a PADI Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver, a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and can play drums, piano, xylophone, and ukulele. Are you exhausted yet? Cyrus isn’t – he’s already working on his next big project to bring the best of Betterment to our customers.

Andrew Weisgall

Customer Analytics Manager

As a Customer Analytics Manager, Andrew is like Betterment's proverbial watchmaker – he finds out what makes our customers tick, and how we can make their experiences better. More specifically, he works to answer important questions like, What is important to our customers? It’s Andrew's work that allows us to make Betterment even more engaging and easier to use, and all of us – as both colleagues and Betterment users – are thrilled he's brought his chops to the team.

Andrew comes to Betterment with not one but two degrees from Columbia University. After receiving his BA in history, he worked as an equity research analyst at Sanford Bernstein, focusing on cable satellite telecom and healthcare IT names. He decided to head back to Morningside Heights for his MBA and now uses both prior work and academic experiences to constructively analyze customer behavior, turning data into positive change. If you notice more ease when using Betterment or new functionality that speaks to you, Andrew probably helped drive its creation.

When Andrew isn't making Betterment a more user-friendly product, you can find him exploring Brooklyn with his two rescue dogs or perfecting his serve (in tennis AND squash). Hit him up for a match sometime – although he'll be the first to tell you that finding an open court in New York isn't nearly as simple as investing with Betterment.

Based on his work with clients like the Department of Housing & Urban Development and US Postal Service, harnessing these companies' massive amounts of data, we knew he'd make stellar contributions to our customers' investment experiences.

When Jon isn't synthesizing information in a meaningful and pragmatic way, he enjoys playing guitar and perfecting his golf swing. Jon was also music director of the Clef Hangers, the oldest a cappella group at UNC Chapel Hill and a YouTube sensation. Ask him to sing the UNC fight song or a Steve Winwood classic, and he may just oblige.

Whether he's providing valuable insight and analysis, or showcasing his musical talents, when Jon is around, everybody wins.

Dan Schaub

Software Engineer

Dan came to Betterment as a front-end developer and a crucial component to scaling our technology organization. He joins a seasoned team of developers with a passion for coding, a diverse background, and a hunger to discover, How can we do it better?

After completing his degree in biology from NYU, Dan worked as a web developer at an ad agency, taking the reins on experience-focused projects for big names like Paul Mitchell, L'Oreal, Tommy Hilfiger, and Scoop NYC. From there he dove into the NYC startup scene, honing his front-end engineering skills at Group Commerce, a white-label eCommerce company. Dan has an impressive background, but what’s even more remarkable is that he is self-taught and has been making web sites since he was a kid. Now he brings his talents to Betterment every day, helping to ensure every one of our customers' visits is simple, productive, and enjoyable.

Dan loves to improve his craft in his spare time, taking as many free classes on Coursera as he can. He also enjoys watching the Yankees and playing golf when he can get out of the city. Some may ask if he has a hidden talent or hobby – with a background in biology, you might say it's coding. Lucky for us it's not a secret anymore.

Software Engineer

Mike's a pretty laid back guy. But when it comes to writing code, he takes it as seriously as his baseball career (he was an All-American in college!). His academic background, which includes degrees in software engineering and computer science from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, speaks to his talents. Between that and Mike's professional accomplishments he's an All-American in the development world, too.

Before joining Betterment's dev team, Mike was a software engineer at Quantitative Risk Management, the world's leading enterprise risk management consulting firm. He left Chicago for New York and was a software engineer at Group Commerce, a white-label e-commerce platform for publishers. While at Group Commerce, Mike worked on projects with corporate clients such as Meredith Corporation, Thrillist, and the New York Times. He knows C#, Java, SQL, and how to build great things with all of them.

Mike’s address changed, but he’s still a Chicago sports fan. Mike also likes to keep his All-American talents sharp when he's not hitting home runs of code, playing softball and running in his free time. You wouldn’t know about his talents without asking, though. Mike's the kind of guy who would rather talk about the Cubs lineup than all the awesome things he's accomplished.

Nick’s professional career started at Citi – he was a financial analyst covering markets in Latin America and then a product manager on Citi’s Global Payments team. He decided his real calling was in startups and technology, so Nick moved to OpenFin, an open platform providing runtime software for financial desktop applications. It was there he was Lead Product Manager, in charge of product development, user experience and optimizing the platform for customers.

Nick is an active participant in the New York startup scene. In addition to co-organizing The Enterprise Tech Meetup and NYC Startup Weekend, Nick co-founded The FinTech Hackathon, which brings together developers and designers to develop financial products and discover new technologies for consumers and institutional customers.

Sam Moore

Software Engineer

Sam is a talented web developer, with a penchant for bringing scale to organizations. That's why we wanted his skills at Betterment – every day that we grow, people like Sam help bring our increased functionality to all of our customers.

Before Betterment, Sam used Microsoft web technologies to architect and build a custom content management system for an eLearning publisher. Through Sam's handiwork, large amounts of content provided to eLearning users could be managed seamlessly. He moved on to Group Commerce, continuing to build his expertise in the Microsoft web stack. While there, he and his team built the administrative web apps for managing all e-commerce websites running on the Group Commerce platform.

In addition to being an expert in Java, JavaScript, C#, and Ruby, Sam was also head of the Society of Computer Science at Fordham University. He led a research group on Machine Learning using Mobile Device sensors, and co-authored papers as a result of the research. He has a breadth of engineering knowledge, both from experience and academia. Whatever it is that needs to be built, he'll find a thorough solution to the problem.

When Sam isn't blowing us away with his development knowledge, he watches wild amounts of sports, particularly baseball, hockey, and football. He is also quite taken with American history – ask him what's hanging on one of his walls and the Gettysburg Address could make its way into the conversation.

Jeff is the calming presence of the Betterment office. But when it comes to writing code, he's wild with talent. Jeff's speciality is scale. It's why we were so excited to have him on our development team – he's helps bring Betterment to a lot more customers, while keeping Betterment's signature sleek design intact.

Jeff joins us from Group Commerce, a white-label e-commerce platform building solutions for merchants, publishers, and consumers. He's an expert at building things and then making sure they work – while at Group Commerce Jeff wrote code as a software engineer and tested that code as a quality assurance engineer. His primary focus was maintaining and scaling product environments for clients such as CBS, Hearst Publications, Daily Candy, and Thrillist. Jeff also has a degree in computer science from Columbia University. When he's building for Betterment (in C# or Java), Jeff is already thinking, "How will this work for our customers?"

Jeff likes to take it easy in his free time, riding his bike and bringing his son to the park. When the New York weather is fickle, Jeff is a big movie aficionado. He's the type of guy we love having in our bustling office – always down to catch up about weekend plans or walk you through the new features he just coded.

Clean, elegant code. That's Greg's passion. A self-described perfectionist, Greg likes to keep it relatable, testable, and extensible. That's why we snatched him up for our development team – he furthers our commitment to sleek and elegant design, beginning with the foundation of our app.

Greg graduated from Cornell University with a Master's degree in computer science, and despite the "gorges" weather, he left Ithaca to bring his engineering talents to New York City. Greg joined Group Commerce, a white-label e-commerce platform for publishers. As a software engineer, he designed and built back-end systems and programming interfaces for corporate clients – these included the New York Times, Boston.com, Hearst Publications, and Daily Candy, to name a few. Andrew is an accomplished engineer and a manager who leads by example. Speak to anyone who's worked on a team with Andrew about his style and you'll likely hear him described as "motivating", "encouraging", and "remarkably able to inspire colleagues." Andrew is passionate about building successful products and maintaining amazing team culture – just a couple of the reasons why he's made such a mark on his colleagues throughout his career.

Andrew comes to Betterment from a long lineage of engineering positions, beginning with DoubleClick by Google, where he was a lead software engineer, engineering manager, and eventually engineering director. It was there he managed over two dozen engineers on- and off-shore for the company's top strategic project, the DoubleClick Ad Exchange. Andrew moved onto Google, where he led multiple engineering teams in C++, Java, and Python development for Google's next-generation ad management platform. Betterment employees have a host of talents, and John is no exception. With a background in Music Composition and Production from Berklee College of Music, one of John's most "notorious" achievements is the arrangement and production of an instrumental recording of Rob Thomas and Santana's "Smooth". As a serious Rubyist, however, John also has contributed code to several open source projects, including Rails. He also knows JavaScript like a C Major scale and can conjure up complicated SQL queries.

Prior to joining Betterment, John was CTO and co-founder of ImpulseSave, a mobile app that let people set aside money towards goals they cared about whenever they were tempted to spend. Before creating ImpulseSave, John was the CTO of Berklee College of Music’s online extension school. It was there he helped build the world's first (and biggest) online music school from the ground up.

In addition to his musical prowess, John is a mean driver. As a high performance driving instructor with the Audi club, he teaches students to drive on race tracks at speeds not found on Manhattan's crowded streets. And the beat goes on with John in town. He’s been playing keyboards in various Boston bands since Berklee, with a view to keeping the tradition alive in New York.

Samantha has a long list of marketing experience, beginning her career as a senior analyst at Digitas focused on digital marketing strategy and analytics. She moved on to serve as head of Web Analytics and Audience Insight at Boston.com, the online presence of the Boston Globe. There she specialized in customer analytics for product, marketing, sales, editorial, and finance. Her last tour was through Soap.com at Quidsi (a subsidiary of Amazon), as Associate Director of Marketing where she was responsible for acquisition and retention marketing efforts. Samantha attended Dartmouth College and has an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was also a marketing teaching assistant. If that doesn't suffice as a vast marketing repertoire, we don't know what does.

When Samantha isn't finding us new channels to promote Betterment through, she loves exploring the city's Mexican culinary offerings, running, and watching New England sports (despite living behind enemy lines). Samantha is also a world traveler – it fits in nicely with her penchant for photography.
