Since robos got their start in the wake of the 2007-08 financial crisis, their ability to withstand severe shocks has yet to be tested.
But Daniel Egan, director of behavioral finance and investing at robo-advisor specialist Betterment, suggests that may be the wrong thing on which to focus.
